I have to tell you, I am so fortunate to be a lawyer in today's world. Things are so much different now than they were even 20 or 30 years ago. I look at older lawyers and their mindset and the way they practice law and I have to chuckle. They do is in a completely different way. Not that it is good or bad – just different.
Frankly, they probably look at me and think I'm a bit crazy. Maybe they're right.
Let's consider what I'm building here at Hawthorn Law – I'm working to build a law firm that serves online entrepreneurs. Let me say that again… my ideal client is an online entrepreneurs.
Who even knew what an online entrepreneur was 15 years ago?
Back when I went off to college, I got a big clunky computer so that I could write papers. Heck, my roommate had an actual “word processor”. Do you remember those?
I'm not talking about a piece of software. No, I'm talking about a typewriter style machine that let you write your paper, then edit it on a little screen, and when you were ready, it would print it out for you. If you want to see what I'm talking about, here is a photo of a top-of-the-line model from 1994, the same year I started college.
God help you if you made any mistakes…
And now today?
I'm working with people that work in their pajamas from their living room, (or maybe a beach somewhere), at all hours of the day or night – whenever and wherever they want. All with a small little metal object that is not much bigger than a notebook.

And now, here at my law “firm” (I use that word loosely, because I too am trying to build a practice that allows me to be location independent), I am about to do something that would have been a pipe dream back when I graduated from law school what seems like eons ago.
I'm building a free online legal training for entrepreneurs. I'm teaching people. Helping them. Providing value to the world in a way that I never could have imagined just a few short years ago.
